Digger
Posted by spuds78
I have one. And I have had it for I don't know how many years. When I first started detecting. I went through 2 or 3 diggers from the hardware stores. This digger is a key tool for any detectorist. I did manage to bend it a little a few years back. But they really are not made to prey out rocks the size of CD's. And I had ALL my weight on it.

Lesche is the only way to go !
I used a Gator Razor Digger last year and I literally bent it over 25 times - straightened it so many times I can't believe it didn't break in half. Every time I used it I had to jam it in between the boards on picnic tables, trees, my truck bumper - anywhere I could straighten it out. I think the Gator Digger's are made out of a combination of soft steel and egg rolls. I've put twice as much pressure on the Lesche I got last month and it's shown no sign of bending at all ! I have several, each for different sites/situations.All are high quality and serve me well.My red handled WW/Lesche rides on a chest harness out of the way, unless needed.A GREAT small digger, but does have it's limitations.Keep in mind that there is no more Lesche anything made anymore! He designed these items and is no longer with his own company. All of his links online turn up nothing. It's a shame because his items absolutely ROCK! WW Manufacturing now produces his designs.
I'll first start off with the USGI issue folding entrenching tool.It has to be the USGI model not some chinese knock off. This is a great tool that serves me well in many places. It cuts nice clean plugs but is a little short so can be hard on the back for me after a long day.A very good general purpose digger and not very heavy.During my time as an Army infantryman however,I have seen them break on occasion digging fighting positions in heavy soil. While in the woods, and neatness of holes is not an issue I have a WW manufacturing ground shark that is fairly tough,(but does have a weak point near the handle for heavy prying-it will bend it you really exert it).Good for general purpose use,but not my favorite in heavy roots or cellar holes. Next comes my Lesche model 38 now made by WW as well. This thing is the KING of all diggers! I can bust through the thickest of roots, rocks, frost or whatever without a problem. It also cuts nice clean holes if I need it to.My personal favorite.I heard that they are discontinuing it?Not sure why. My next digger is somewhat home made.Fiskars makes top notch equipment and they have a large digging shovel called the model 9669.I purchased one,cut 12'' off of the handle and BAM have the most rugged digger that I have ever seen! If the model 38 is the KING than this baby is it's father. If I really need to clear some soil with a digger than this one is it! It is kind of overkill for most situations.Since it is made from steel however it is a bit heavy. Not for everyone as it is both heavy and bulky. George sells or can get all of the listed Lesche/WW diggers as that is where I purchased mine.Hope that this info helps. Jason
He used to make them with groves cut on either side. I have one of each. They are great hand diggers.
